Rommy Car

Why car manufacturers are at the Mobile World Congress.

Push your way through the crowds at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, and you'll notice a peculiar presence among the usual technology and phone innovators.

Nestled alongside stands for tech monoliths such as Orange, Nokia, and Samsung are car manufacturers including Seat[1], Ford[2] and Peugeot[3].

The world's biggest exhibition for mobile phones might seem an odd backdrop for the automotive sector, but MWC provides a platform for manufacturers to raise their profiles as technology pioneers.

Seat has been here for three years, but this is the first year it's had its own stand. It took the opportunity to launch an electric concept car[4], showcase new technology and announce its ambitions to be connectivity frontrunners in the automotive sector.

Speaking at the event, Seat boss Luca de Meo said: "I remember people discussing whether it made sense for us to be in a place like this.

"I personally had the experience of Audi[5] of going to CES[6] [the Consumer Electronics Show], it wasn't my idea but we did it properly and CES is now very much contaminated by automotive.

"The reaction of the people [at MWC] shows the brand fits perfectly."

Seat's head of connectivity, Leyre Olavarria, also played up the relevance of being at a technology show.

"MWC is so important to us," she said. "Not just because it's in Barcelona [Seat's home], but because if we want to be frontrunners in connectivity then this is the perfect playground to showcase our technology."

Young, tech-hungry consumers will expect more and more cutting edge technology from their cars, and manufacturers will be desperate to show themselves as innovative technology companies to that demographic.

Gaining exposure at major world tech events will help manufacturers transform their public perception. It might seem a novelty now, but in the future, every car manufacturer may want a stand at the world's biggest smartphone exhibition.

Source Israel framed slain Palestinian as Islamic State terrorist.Candid photograph of smiling man

Yaqoub Abu al-Qiyan (Mossawa)

An Israeli justice ministry probe is expected to contradict police claims that a Palestinian citizen was attempting a car ramming attack when he was shot dead in January, Israeli media reported this week[1].

Yaqoub Abu al-Qiyan, 50, was shot by police[2] while driving his vehicle during a pre-dawn raid to destroy homes built without permits in Umm al-Hiran. The Israeli government seeks to evacuate[3] the Palestinian Bedouin village in the south of Israel in order to build a Jewish settlement in its place.

An officer was also killed and several demonstrators – including a Palestinian member of Israel's parliament[4] – were injured by sponge-tipped bullets and other weaponry fired by police during the 18 January raid.

Eyewitnesses and the slain man's family told media that Abu al-Qiyan was attempting to leave the village and that his vehicle accelerated only after he was fired on, suggesting he became incapacitated and lost control of his car before it veered off course and drove into a group of police.

But police and senior Israeli government officials wasted no time in framing Abu al-Qiyan as a terrorist immediately after his death.

Islamic State claims

Israeli police called[5] Abu al-Qiyan "a terrorist from the Islamic Movement," a banned Palestinian political party in Israel, and stated they were investigating possible ties to the Islamic State – claims repeated by police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld on Twitter[6].

Gilad Erdan[7], Israel's public security minister, meanwhile told Channel 10 news[8] that "As far as the police is concerned and based on the findings and the investigations, this is definitely a terror attack."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated[9] that "This is the second ramming attack in recent days," referring to an earlier incident in which a Palestinian assailant struck and killed four soldiers[10] with his truck.

"We are fighting this murderous phenomenon, which has struck both Israel and the world," Netanyahu added, linking the Umm al-Hiran incident to car ramming attacks in France, Germany and the US.

During the slain officer's funeral, Israeli police chief Roni Alsheikh called[11] Abu al-Qiyan "a despicable terrorist." He added that "Everyone knows that the assailant was a teacher in a school where six other teachers have been arrested for choosing to teach [Islamic State] ideology rather than the Education Ministry curriculum."

Video soon emerged from Umm al-Hiran that cast further doubt on those strident claims.

Yaqoub Abu al-Qiyan was buried on 24 January after Israel's high court ordered the release of his body.

Police aerial surveillance footage[12] leaked to the media was synced with video recorded by a journalist on the ground and published by the UK-based research group Forensic Architecture. The group's analysis supported eyewitness accounts that Abu al-Qiyan's car only accelerated after he was fired on.

Forensic Architecture also identified "the clear sound of a single gunshot at a time [when] several policemen are seen surrounding the stopped vehicle," indicating that officers shot the incapacitated Abu al-Qiyan again to verify their kill.

Al Jazeera news footage contradicted police claims[13] that Abu al-Qiyan's headlights were turned off and that he was speeding towards police before he was shot.

The Israeli government has refused[14] to give Abu al-Qiyan's widow a copy of the initial findings of an autopsy report, and only transferred his body for burial after a rights group petitioned Israel's high court[15].

Pathology reports leaked to Israeli media suggest that a bullet to Abu al-Qiyan's leg caused his knee to lock and may have been what made him accelerate. They also indicated that a bullet wound in Abu al-Qiyan's chest caused massive bleeding lasting up to half an hour while police prevented him from receiving first-aid.

"It is possible that Abu al-Qiyan would have remained alive had medical teams been permitted to treat him sooner," Israel's Ynet reported[16].

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses told The Jerusalem Post[17] that they saw officers fire on a police vehicle during the incident, throwing into question whether the officer killed at the scene was struck by Abu al-Qiyan's car or hit by friendly fire.

Calls for resignation

Israeli activists last week disrupted a police ceremony at which Erdan was speaking, demanding answers about Abu al-Qiyan's killing. Protesters accused Erdan of incitement:

A growing number of calls[18] for Erdan and Alsheikh to resign are being made since the justice ministry probe hit headlines this week.

"Erdan and Alsheikh are the chiefs of Israel's law enforcement authorities. It is intolerable that two men who incite and tell untruths like them should continue to head these important authorities," an editorial[19] in the Tel Aviv newspaper Haaretz asserted.

Adalah, a human rights group which is calling on Israel's attorney general to launch a criminal probe[20] into Erdan's "incitement to racism against Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel," stated on Wednesday that those responsible for Abu al-Qiyan's death must be brought to justice.

"From the outset, Adalah maintained that the version of events in Umm al-Hiran promoted by the Israeli police and Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan was both false and inflammatory," the group stated[21].

For his part, Erdan – whose remit also includes combatting the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement[22] to hold Israel accountable for its violations of Palestinians' human rights – stated on Facebook on Thursday[23] that "if it turns out that this wasn't an attack, then of course [Abu al-Qiyan's] family must be apologized to."

Erdan, however, doubled down on his accusations of incitement against Palestinian members of Israel's parliament, the Knesset, singling out the lawmaker wounded by police in Umm al-Hiran.

"The Arab Knesset members led by Ayman Odeh who incited residents in the months prior to the incident produced a widespread public and media campaign whose whole aim was to deter the police and myself from the ongoing enforcement against illegal constructions," he stated.

Source Peugeot Instinct concept previews brand's future.

Peugeot has unveiled a new concept car at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Peugeot Instinct presents the brand's vision of how autonomy could make car journeys more pleasurable.

Key to this are four separate driving modes. When travelling hands-free, 'Autonomous Soft' can be chosen for comfort or 'Autonomous Sharp' to minimise journey times. But with a plug-in hybrid powerplant and 297bhp to play with, enthusiasts might prefer 'Drive Boost' mode, while 'Drive Relax' is on hand for when you still want control, but aren't in a hurry.

As well as forecasting advanced autonomous systems, the Instinct Concept shows off a daring new look, which may give pointers as to how a future Peugeot family car might look, inside and out.

Peugeot has partnered with Samsung for the concept and the two brands were keen to stress their belief that autonomous driving technology shouldn't take the fun out of driving. David Peel, Peugeot's UK managing director, said: "The autonomous future is happening now, and Peugeot Instinct demonstrates how this can still be driven by a passion for brilliant design and driving pleasure."

The head of Peugeot's concept car development team, Matthias Hossann, added: "We're creating new forms of driving pleasure. These may come from the interfaces, the architecture or the styling. There's no reason why a self-driving car should be dull to look at or to experience."

Peugeot Instinct Concept technology

Peugeot recognises that a car's occupants will demand more infotainment when the car is in control, so the Instinct concept makes use of a so-called 'Internet of Things' (IoT) platform in the guise of Samsung's Artik cloud-based system. This is intended to seamlessly sync with passengers' devices, learning their preferences and routines, right down to their favourite lighting conditions and audio settings.

Occupants will also be able to issue voice commands to the car, which a 'chatbot' will interpret. This enables the Instinct to act as a personal assistant – Peugeot gives online shopping and the ordering of cinema tickets as examples.

The car can also account for real-time traffic conditions. For example, if the owner's diary has an appointment at a specific time, the car will encourage them to set off at a time calculated to allow for travel delays.

The Instinct's dashboard presents an evolution of Peugeot's i-Cockpit technology, where conventional instruments are replaced by a full-colour screen that can display many combinations of information. Here, though, it's optimised to support autonomous driving.

The car's autonomous systems are fed data from cameras integrated with the LED headlamps, which scan the road ahead for obstacles and hazards. In Peugeot's vision of autonomy, the driver remains fully in charge of the car and can choose between hands-on or autonomous driving. In autonomous mode, the steering wheel, control panel and pedals retract.

However, the driver still has a supervisory role, with an i-Device control panel that enables autonomous mode to be overridden, for example to overtake a slower vehicle in front.

Peugeot Instinct Concept design

In shaping the Instinct, Peugeot's designers focused on optimised aerodynamics for maximum fuel efficiency, while retaining a sense of character. The result is a car the brand says would still be recognisable as a Peugeot even if the lion badge was removed, as a large slatted area at the front suggests the outline of the company's most recent grille design. However, the Instinct has not been officially linked to any new Peugeot that might be in the pipeline.

Inside, although the evolved i-Cockpit instrument panel is a key feature, the interior is intended to push perceptions of the brand upmarket, with plush fabrics and high-quality materials. It also seeks to express the car's dual role – changing from a focused cockpit to somewhere the driver can relax when autonomous mode is engaged. Although the wide-opening doors are a long way from being a production possibility, the Instinct's open-plan layout is likely to become an important element of autonomous car interiors.

Source Silver the most popular Bay of Plenty car colour 'but some will just love blue'.

New car buyers in the Bay of Plenty opt for silver more often than any other colour, unlike most of the rest of New Zealand.

Tauranga car buyers - 25.5 per cent of them, in fact, go with the national trend and choose white.

White is the most common car colour in the whole of New Zealand, making up just under a quarter of new vehicles, according to the latest NZTA figures.

Pongakawa resident Melissa Smith and her partner wanted a different colour for their new Hyundai Tucson, choosing a dark blue - the sixth most popular colour in recent registrations, both in the Bay and nationwide.

"All our cars have been silver and we wanted something different," Smith said.

In the Bay of Plenty region, 25.3 per cent of new car buyers opt for silver, with just over nine per cent choosing blue.

The NZTA figures from January show grey, black and red are also in the top five most popular colours, in both the Bay of Plenty and nationally.

John Hayes, dealer principal at Tauranga Citroen, said people commonly chose smaller cars in brighter colours, and large vehicles in duller colours.

"Yellow in a big car is too much," he said.

Mr Hayes said he had not observed a more general trend in colour choice, but their 2-series cars were commonly bought in colours such as orange and red.

Many larger vehicles are not offered in such a wide range of colours, he said.

Silver was far more popular than white in Rotorua, Whakatane and Western Bay of Plenty.

The trend was most noticeable in Whakatane, where more than a third of new vehicles registered were silver.

One New Zealand study from 2003 suggested silver was the safest colour, but a later Australian study found it was among the least safe.

Ms Smith said she did not consider safety when choosing the colour of her new car, as it was packed with safety features like reversing cameras and air bags.

She and her partner chose blue solely because they liked the colour.

"We've always wanted a blue car."

Speed and alcohol are not suspected to be factors. Police continue to investigate.

Source Drawing Cars is Hard—Here's a Way to Make it Slightly Simpler.

A lot of you have been asking me to draw a car and honestly I've been avoiding it! But for good reason… because it is hard. Drawing a car is a lot different from any other product conceptualization. I think this is because we have strong emotional associations with cars. So much so that our minds have built them up a system of symbols and it can be hard to get past those to draw what actually feels like an automobile. The most similarly difficult subject to draw is the human form and face. If you can master the human form and the car, then I think you can draw just about anything with ease. In this video, I set up a relatively simple perspective without a lot of forced vanishing points to make it a little easier on ourselves.

Enter a caption (optional)

The more you get comfortable with sketching a vehicle the more you can start to play with challenging perspectives. For this video, I chose a relatively simple front 3/4 view with more emphasis on the front. Notice how I start by seeing up a very loose perspective box. Now I know you've seen a hundred demos where the guy draws a box and one step later it is magically jet fighter or an owl, but in this case I use the vertices of the box to act as centerlines for wheel ellipses. Once I have the wheels in place, I sketch out the shoulder line of the car, or the character line that tends to flow right over both wheels. Off of this I hook around the base of the front of the vehicle and rail the line up into the opposite fender. Now I have the lower half of the car blocked in and I can start adding form and detail to that. Notice how I build it around the centerline to create a strong personality to the front. this composition of elements on t he front of the car is called the down road graphic, or DRG.

I'll start to build the upper half of the car, or the greenhouse, by sketching in the A,B, and C pillars. Notice how my A Pillar essentially points to the center of the front wheel ellipse. Likewise my C Pillar points toward the center of the rear wheel. The B Pillar doesn't go vertically, it slants in. That is because the greenhouse of a car is frequently tapered. This is called tumblehome. I also draw through the greenhouse showing the A,B, and C pillars on the opposite side of the car through the glass, which is called the daylight opening, or DLO.

Now that my line work is roughed in I use a simple strategy to shade the concept. Using a cloud blue Prismacolor marker I shade all of the upward facing surfaces to simulate a little sky reflection. Using 30% and 60% cool greys, I shade all of the ground facing surfaces. It is a simple technique that helps the sketch read with a minimum of fuss.

Sketching a car is hard. Did this video make you any better at it? Probably not—it takes years of practice. I could teach a semester long class on just getting OK at sketching a car in a few perspectives. So if you are a little rough at it, don't beat yourself up. The key is to keep practicing. As always, post below with any comments, questions, or requests.

Yo! C77 Sketch is a video series from Core77 forum moderator and prolific designer, Michael DiTullo[1]. Tired of that guy in the studio who always gets his ideas picked because of his hot sketches? Source Punisher Emblem, 'Blue Lives Matter' Removed From Kentucky Police Cruisers After Backlash.

CATLETTSBURG, Kentucky -- An Eastern Kentucky police chief has removed large decals with the Punisher skull and "Blue Lives Matter" from eight police cars after a backlash following the publication of a Herald-Leader story.

The Catlettsburg Police department, which employs eight full-time and two part-time officers for a population of about 2,500, featured the images on the hoods of its 2013 and 2017 Ford Interceptor sedans and sport-utility vehicles, assistant police chief Gerry Hatzel said. The stylized skull was from "The Punisher" comic book series.

The logo was praised by local residents but raised questions among others in the commonwealth.

The designs were spearheaded by Police Chief Cameron Logan, who worked with a vinyl decal shop in Louisiana to get the decals printed. Logan installed the decals on all the police vehicles in December. He would not discuss how much the decals cost.

"That design is basically to give back to the police officers," Logan, who has been with the department for 13 years, said before reversing course on the emblems. "Our lives matter just as much as anybody's. ... I'm not racist or anything like that, I'm not trying to stir anything up like that. I consider it to be a 'warrior logo.' Just 'cause it has 'Blue Lives Matter' on the hood, all lives matter. That decal represents that we will take any means necessary to keep our community safe."

Overdoses and drug-related crimes have been on the rise, the chief said.

The city council and Mayor Randall Peterman approved the designs, Logan said. The Herald-Leader unsuccessfully sought comment from the mayor.

Richard "Andy" Brown, 37, who was elected to the six-person council after its vote on the decals, was critical of the decals.

"I don't see why they'd waste the money, honestly," said Brown, a Catlettsburg native whose family owns the IGA grocery in town. "My main objective is to make sure the taxpayers' money is used in the most efficient way possible. It wasn't expensive, but still. If it's something they feel strongly about, they're risking their lives and I understand that. I just think it's a little bit strange. There's been a lot of people mistreated by police, and their lives matter, too, like that guy in North Carolina."

The shooting Brown referred to was of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, in September 2016 by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.

Central to the decals was the Punisher, the nom de guerre of the Marvel anti-hero Frank Castle, a former Force Reconnaissance Marine and Vietnam War veteran who doles out justice "using torture, murder and kidnapping in his anti-crime crusade," according to Time Magazine. The logo has been unofficially used by military units and was popularized in the award-winning film "American Sniper."

The "Blue Lives Matter" movement unofficially began in December 2014 after two New York Police Department officers were shot and killed "by a fanatic who believed the lies of Black Lives Matter, the media, and politicians," states Bluelivesmatter.blue, a media company founded by active and retired officers. The movement has since been embraced by President Donald Trump and has been used to describe a series of bills in Mississippi and Kentucky that would label crimes against police officers as hate crimes.

Kentucky's "Blue Lives Matter" legislation is House Bill 14. The bill passed in Kentucky's House on Feb. 13 after Donna Mayfield, R-Winchester, was called a racist by Black Lives Matter protesters angry over her support of the legislation. Louisiana became the first state to pass a "Blue Lives Matter" bill in May 2016.

Some Catlettsburg residents said they hope Kentucky is the next to formally embrace the "Blue Lives Matter" movement.

Daniel Ray, 63, grew up in Catlettsburg and said that respect for police has suffered nationwide.

"I think everybody should be out there supporting their police and their community," Ray said. "They're out there putting their lives on the line every day. They get little gratitude for that already, and when we have silly people who challenge them and wonder what's going to happen, what do you expect is going to happen? We shouldn't be challenging our police officers. We should be supporting them."

That opinion was shared by Charles Allen, the pastor of Catlettsburg's United Methodist Church. Allen has lived in Catlettsburg since 1968 and is originally from Michigan.

"I think it's a good thing," Allen said. "I think all lives matter. Nothing to do with color. Black lives, yellow lives, red lives, whatever color of your skin. To God, every human being has a soul and we matter to God and we matter to each other."

Photos of the Catlettsburg police cars were positively featured on the Kentucky Going Blue's Facebook page, but on Reddit's Kentucky community, the response was more critical. Reddit users questioned the legality of the decals and suggested the Punisher was "a really poorly thought-out message for a law enforcement agency to be putting out there."

Syracuse University's Roy Gutterman, who also is director of the school's Tully Center for Free Speech, said the Catlettsburg Police Department was within its rights to feature the decals, which are often "an ordinary governmental administrative decision."

"Even though the slogan mimics the 'Black Lives Matter' movement, I would not say that 'Blue Lives Matter' necessarily demeans any other slogan that would subject the city to any other additional criticism," Gutterman said.

Gutterman also said the department's use of the Punisher could generate negative attention from the Walt Disney Co., which acquired Marvel Entertainment in December 2009 for $4.2 billion. Disney threatened legal action against a gun accessory manufacturer in Nov. 2015 for using its Punisher imagery. The city didn't seek Disney's approval, the chief said. Disney did not respond to a request for comment.

"If the department is using an actual comic book character, I suspect this usage is an infringement of intellectual property rights, specifically the copyright held by the creators or owners of that character,' Gutterman said before the decals were removed Friday. "The appropriation of that image might be more troubling than whatever the character may stand for. They might as well put Batman or Superman on the cruisers while they're at it."

INJURED car washers are tended to by passers-by after a suspected drink-driver mowed them down in a row yesterday.

The motorist, in his 30s, had been a customer at the car wash when an argument erupted with several Romanian workers around 8.20am.

Three people are in a critical condition after the 'drink driver' ploughed into them this morning Five victims injured, one critically after a Mercedes left the road in Bellingham, London

Dramatic images show bloodied victims strewn across the pavement after the driver smashed into a car wash, leaving one person "trapped underneath".

Four men and a woman were hurt as the car sped on to a pavement to hit them — leaving one trapped under it.

One victim, 25, was fighting for his life last night.

In addition to the victim fighting for life, police said a man, 25, and a woman, 35, were  "serious but stable" and two other men, aged 36 and 46, had minor injuries.

The driver got into his Mercedes  to plough into workers, scattering debris and footwear across the pavement in  Catford, South East London.

He then fled, chased by two men — one soaked in blood — who yelled: "What the f*** have you done?"

Witness Vincent Bakare, 30, said: "He had a big disagreement  in the car wash.

"I'm not sure if he told them to 'f*** off' or they did. He zoomed off in his car."

Colin Liddell, 29, added: "The  car turned round, accelerated and hit the people. He intended to."

Misasu Towolawi, 26, said: "We  saw  people covered in blood."

Firefighters joined other emergency units at the scene, below, and freed the victim stuck beneath the car.

Witnesses described scenes of "carnage" at the car wash.[1]

Minasu Towolawi told the Evening Standard[2]: "I went up there and I just saw carnage. There were two men lying flat on their backs there.

"There was another lady was being sat upright and people were trying to get her awake. She looked gone to me.

"They were all just wailing and crying."

Eyewitness Colin Liddell, 29, added: "I saw the car turn around at the junction and then he put his accelerator to the floor and hit the bollard and five people before he hit the wall."

Police arrested a man on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and drink-driving.

He was taken to hospital with a head injury.

The Mercedes appears to have come off the road and careered through a row of bollards before hitting a low wall at the end of a hedge.

The car's bonnet and boot were popped open by the impact and its airbags all deployed. Debris was left strewn across the pavement.

Source Mechanic, 74, hands his car keys to a stranded stranger so he can make it to a funeral after his vehicle broke down 70 miles from the service.

An Iowa man's encounter with a kind stranger after his car broke down while he was on a 370-mile road trip to a funeral has gone viral.

Todd Steinkamp had been traveling from Iowa to Green Bay, Wisconsin when he met a Good Samaritan who lent him his truck to complete his trip.

He had been 70 miles away from his destination when his car began to give out.

Todd Steinkamp (right) had been travelling to a funeral from Iowa to Green Bay, Wisconsin when he met a Good Samaritan, Glenn Geib, who lent him his truck to complete his trip

Steinkamp asked for directions for a nearby rental service when Geib offered him his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

In a Facebook[4] post, Steinkamp said he had set out on the journey at 5.30am on Tuesday when he began to hear a grinding noise from his front left tire.

Shortly after 7am, Steinkamp had reached Wild Rose, Wisconsin, a town with a population of 725 when he became desperate for help and pulled into Lauritzen Sports.

He met Glenn Geib, a 74-year-old mechanic. Steinkamp said the elderly man noticed he was formally dressed and asked him where he was headed.

Steinkamp's car gave out in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, 70 miles away from his destination in Green Bay

'I told him I was from Iowa on my way to a funeral. He paused and said "pull it around back". He got it up on the lift and confirmed it was the wheel bearing,' Steinkamp wrote.

Geib warned him that his car would not make the full trip. But when Steinkamp asked the mechanic where he could find a car rental agency, the man pulled out his own car keys and offered him his truck.

'Take my truck. Fill it up with gas, don't turn on the emergency lights and get going. She'll do 120mph if you need it to,' he told Steinkamp with a smile.

He met the kind mechanic in Lauritzen's Sports in the small town of Wild Rose

Act of kindness: Geib told Steinkamp his car would not make the 70-mile trip and offered his own car telling Steinkamp to fill up the gas tank

Steinkamp said he was shocked the mechanic would offer a stranger his own car after only meeting him 10 minutes before.

As he was desperate to make it to the funeral, he accepted the offer and drove to Green Bay in the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado.

Steinkamp said he returned to the auto shop after the funeral that same day and thanked Geib.

'Glenn…the [74-year-old] mechanic with a grip of steel turned a terrible day into a good one with a great lesson…just be kind and help if you can', he said.

The elder man told WBAY[5] he helped Steinkamp as he seemed like had gone through quiet an ordeal.

'If you give a guy a truck, your truck don't come back, it's an old used truck what are you going to do,' he said.

Steinkamp's told the heartwarming story on Facebook on Wednesday which has since been shared 7,400 times.

Lauritzen's Sports also took to Facebook to thank the kind man.

'Thank you Glenn from all of us at Lauritzen's for taking such great care us and our customers and the village of Wild Rose. All your efforts and hard work do not go unnoticed,' they said.
