  • Storm Doris brought parts of Merseyside to a standstill on Thursday

These pub customers had a narrow escape when their car missed a crashing tree by inches.

The men were leaving the car park when Storm Doris sent a tree crashing down at the Derby Arms in Knowsley Village, Merseyside.

Landlord Dave McGinn was shocked when he watched the drama back on CCTV and said he'd never seen anything like it before.

He said: 'A customer came into the pub and said a tree had just fallen over in the car park.

'Sometimes people exaggerate don't they? But we looked back on the CCTV.

'They've had a lucky escape.

'There are a couple of fellas here chopping up the tree and clearing it away now.

As the car drives out of the pub the tree can be seen crashing down inches from the driver

'They are big conker trees that have been here since the pub was built.'

Storm Doris raged across the region on Thursday, with numerous roads blocked by fallen trees, several flights diverted, trains and ferries disrupted and plenty of trampolines sent flying through the streets.

The sudden crash takes the driver by surprise, but the car manages to swerve away

Huge winds of up to 80mph battered the north west, giving tree surgeons their busiest day in years.

Today the clean-up operation was in full effect as the council was out in force to try and undo the damage.
