White on white is a dangerous game in the world of cars. 

It's a pretty illogical colour combination in the real world. I know if I were to arrive at work in a white suit with white shoes I'd probably be barred from entry. Either that or they'd assume that I'm some zany radio character trying to be edgy.

Yet in the car world white on white remains a colour combo reserved for the real movers and shakers. Cars like Peugeot's pint-sized 106 Rallye, the Lamborghini Countach, and anything with the Type R badge.

And while the Porsche 959 isn't particularly well known for donning the test-match strip, this particular one does, and it's also very very special.

That's not because of this car's impressive technological achievements — it was one of the first in the world to exceed 300kph (it was the quickest production car in the world at the time), it was all-wheel drive, and it was turbocharged. 

The Sport name does give it some allure, but again isn't quite the factor that makes this particular car special. This was the name given to an extra limited run of 29 959s that featured a stripped interior with a roll cage.

No, what makes this 959 Sport truly special is the price at which it sold recently through RM Sotheby's Paris sale. It sold — and I hope you're sitting down — for $2.9 million dollars New Zealand. 

That's a lot of money; almost twice as much as the last 959 to sell through RM in 2015, and more than any other 959 has ever garnered in any previous sale. That's correct, this is the most expensive 959 ever sold.

And considering how many innovations honed on the 959 are still being praised on today's supercar range, that price is likely to just keep going up and up.
