This is the shocking image a mother has shared of her seven-year-old daughter laying in a hospital bed after being run over on a notoriously dangerous road.

Estelle Burton, 39, predicted an accident would happen on the road where her daughter hit and had been campaigning for two years for a crossing to be installed.

But her pleas went ignored and tragically on March 13 as she was crossing the road with daughter Isabella, seven, a car 'appeared from nowhere' and knocked her down.

Heartbreaking: Isabella was knocked down by a car in Derbyshire on  a notoriously busy road where her mother had campaigned for two years for a pedestrian crossing to be installed

Happier times: Ms Burton said she feared her daugh ter Isabella (pictured) could have been killed in the horrific accident which took place on March 13

Isabella was holding her mother's hand as she stepped off the kerb of Stenson Road, Derby when the car knocked her over.

The schoolgirl was left with a double break of her leg, has had to have a skin graft and has lost five teeth in the crash.

Mother-of-five Ms Burton has released graphic pictures of Isabella lying in her hospital bed in a desperate bid to persuade the council to take traffic calming measures.

She has been calling on Derbyshire County Council to install a pedestrian crossing on the road outside her home for two years but without success.

Recalling the moment she saw Isabella knocked down, she said: 'It happened so fast. She was hit by the side of the car.

'I made s ure her siblings stayed safe on the pavement and I stayed with her while we waited for the ambulance to come. People were just crowding around.

'There was huge gash to the side of her head - it was really deep, down to the bone.

'She had five adult teeth knocked out - she'll never get them back - and her tongue was ripped.

'She had a broken tib and fib too, she's had to have a skin graft.

'She's got a lot of recovery to do. My daughter could have been killed.

'We have to cross that road twice-a-day.

'My children have been referred for counselling after having to see their sister in that state and Isabella is having flashbacks when she sleeps - she thinks she's being hit by the car again.'

During a campaign before her daughter Isabella (pictured above, left) was hit, Ms Burton foresaw an accident where she said 'someone would be killed' unless a crossing was implemented

In 2015, Estelle foresaw an accident on the busy stretch of road, when she told her local newspaper: 'Stenson Road itself is a 40mph zone but it's like a race track.

'People don't do 40 and they don't slow down to let pedestrians cross the road.

'Something needs to be done because, if we're not careful, someone will get killed on that road and it will probably be someone's child.

'I have to wait until the road is completely clear to cross it with the kids.'

A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: 'We're sorry to hear about the accident and will be speaking to police to understand the factors invo lved and see if there are any safety measures which could have helped avoid this happening.

'We've previously carried out surveys at the site following requests for a crossing, but the number of vehicles and pedestrians using the road do not meet the necessary criteria for installation.

'It's possible that the number of new homes set to be built in the area will bring the extra volume of traffic which means a crossing is necessary. We'll continue to monitor the situation.'

Derbyshire Police investigated the crash but have not taken action against the driver.
