Travellers would need to enter their journey details, including the time of day they want to travel into an easy-to-use app.

The app then suggests the best mode of transport depending on the time, cost, traffic and other demands.

For journeys where there is high congestion, the capsule can disconnect from the ground motor and then uses the 16ft by 14ft propellor to carry the passengers in a self-pilot mode.

Once the passenger has reached their destination, the capsule, if disconnected from the ground module will automatically return to its dedicated recharge station.

The capsule can travel up to 62 miles on a single charge.

"Successfully designing and implementing solutions that will work both in the air and on the ground requires a joint reflection on the part of both aerospace and automotive sectors, alongside collaboration with local government bodies for infrastructure and regulatory frameworks."

CEO at Italdesign Jorg Astalosch went on to add: "Automobiles are part of a much wider eco-system: if you want to design the urban vehicle of the future, the traditional car cannot alone be the solution for megacities.

"In the next years ground transportation will move to the next level and from being shared, connected and autonomous it will also go multimodal and moving into the third dimension."
