An Uber driver gave a Sydney family a rude awakening Sunday morning when he ploughed his rental vehicle into their front yard.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Jubilee Place and Darling St, Balmain, just after 1am following reports of a car crashing into a home.

The 50-year-old driver was attempting a three-point turn, having just let out one of his passengers, when he accidentally knocked the gear shift into drive instead of reverse.

The vehicle suddenly lurched into the gutter, through a picket white fence and was wedged into balcony's foundation, News Corp Australia[4] reported.

The owners of the home were on their way to bed after watching television when they heard a loud commotion.

'We were watching the Grand Prix when we heard a huge bang. I spent all day in the garden too,' the man said.

A neighbour who lives on the second-story of the flat said she was awoken by the noise but didn't realise how close the accident was to her.

The driver had just dropped off a passenger when he accidentally put the car into drive instead of reverse

'We came out to see what was going on and looked out,' she said. 'Then I looked down and there was a car in the front lawn.'

Firefighters worked to remove debris and removed the car before clearing the scene.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.
