COC: Safety tips for residents in the City of Columbia.

Columbia, S.C. (WACH)-- Road conditions may be hazardous and it is important that residents use caution when walking or driving after severe weather occurs.

It is important to always obey all emergency personnel, signs, caution tape, etc. The City of Columbia has put together a list of tips and procedures to follow when traveling in the area:

Flash Flood

• Don't walk or drive through flooded areas. Turn around so you don't drown.

• Flood-prone areas around Columbia include:

o Intersection of Main and Whaley streets

o Parking lots behind 300 Main St.

o Parking lots behind Blatt P.E. Center

o Sumter St. under the railroad bridge

o Pickens St. under the pedestrian crossing

o Five Points area

Tornado Warning

• Move to an interior hallway on a lower level in the middle of the building you are in

• Stay away from all windows and glass doors

• DO NOT use the elevators

• Close and/or lock all windows and exterior doors

• Call 911 to report any injuries and tell the dispatcher:

o Your location

o Type of injury or illness of victim

o Victim's status (conscious, breathing, or bleeding)

o Age of victim

o Stay on the line until released by the dispatcher

o DON'T leave until advised or warning ends

Severe Thunderstorms

• Find a safe shelter

• Close all exterior doors, windows, and blinds

• Stay away from the windows
